Eagles are a part of daily life in Kodiak. In the winter months they congregate in town where they actively feed at the local fish processing plants. In the summer and fall, they can be found near the rivers and streams where salmon runs occur. I have a tree near my back deck where eagles frequently land to view the neighborhood. A favorite occupation of mine is to spend time down near the docks when boats are in town delivering fish. The eagles are drawn to the free lunch and there are great photographic opportunities. In the spring of 2008, I found an eagle's nest near the highway and was able to spend hours observing the parents as they sat on the nest waiting for eggs to hatch and then later the eaglet as it was fed and moved about the nest. Unfortunately, about six weeks after hatching, the baby eagle was gone when I arrived for a visit. For over a week I watched in fascination as the parents continued to bring sticks and moss to the nest. I'll be watching the nest this spring.
