One thing about driving on the road system, you never know what you'll see. You may spot fox, deer, buffalo, sea lions, or even a beaver at American River if you're really lucky. By spending time during the winter months down at the harbor, sea lions are commonly seen and even the "Kodiak Killers", our own pod of killer whales can be spotted on occasion. Standing by the channel on Near Island I have observed and videotaped hunts where killer whales attempt to have a sea lion for lunch, as well as watching a transient pod of seven killer whales feed on a school of herring in the harbor for over three hours.
